This listing is for the depicted loose gemstone that I personally precision faceted on my custom-made lapidary equipment
• 2.4 carats
• 8.2mm in length, 6.4mm in width, and 5.2mm in depth
• Faceted in my own Galaxy design
• Unheated/untreated
• Naturally occurring corundum (sapphire)
• Inclusions visible
Detailed Gem Description:
A natural and untreated corundum (sapphire) that has a very slightly bluish Green hue, a light tone, and slightly grayish to grayish saturation depending on the lighting. This gem has visible inclusions most notably rutile silk giving it a slight opalescent appearance! It leans blue in daylight and more teal indoors.
See the last two photos for reference on how I graded these. To maintain originality, I personally made the reference graphics with gems of my own design but it is based on GIA's color description system.
Photos were taken in daylight and under a microscope. Videos were taken outdoors under an overcast sky and indoors in passive lighting, under my overhead LED lights, and by a window. Please review all the videos thoroughly.
Gemstone Rough Country of Origin: Montana, USA (El Dorado Bar)
Cutter: Sennin
• Microscopy Report:
This sapphire has a variety of internal features. Most noticeable are the rutile silk formations. Two clusters are visible, one is clearly defined, it is visible on the pavilion of the gem, and the other is closer to the crown but less defined. These features give this sapphire an opalescent appearance. The crisp intact appearance of these features is indicative that this sapphire has not undergone heat treatment to enhance its color or clarity. Also worth noting are the elongated rutile needles spanning the gem, these are only visible under magnification. Finally, this gem has two fully healed internal fractures. They run parallel to the gemstone's crown, so they aren't visible unless you tilt the gem or view it under magnification. I used the Photo Atlas of Inclusions volumes 1 & 3 by EJ Gübelin and JI Koivula for visual reference.
Microscope photograph descriptions:
Photos 1-2: These are reference photos under a direct light. The inclusions are less noticeable, but you can see the rutile silk needles, the traces of the fully healed fractures, and the opalescent appearance attributed to the rutile silk clusters. (Direct Illumination, 4x)
Photos 3-4: In these photos, I used darkfield illumination. You can see the rutile needles and rutile silk clusters. The more defined one is clearly visible in photo 3. (Darkfield, 4x)
Photo 5: In this photo, I used a very bright spotlight shone through the gemstone. The healed fractures are illuminated in this photo, they look like horizontal lines. (Oblique illumination, 4x)
