• Corundum (sapphire)
- I tried something new with this sapphire, if you look closely you will see the facets spiral inwards towards the center point, this is my new spiral galaxy facet design!
• Gemological description: This is a natural corundum (sapphire) with a dominant bluish-green hue, a dark/medium-dark tone, and vivid saturation. Two colors are clearly visible. In daylight it is dominantly blue, under warmer spectrum artificial light it is dominantly green. It has indicator inclusions typical of corundum from this locality that can be viewed under high magnification.
• Microscopy Report:
This gem features a handful of inclusions that are typical of corundum from Garba Tula, Kenya. Most notable is the rutile silk (photos 3 &4). There is also a fluid-filled feather near the crown (photos 1 &2). The crisp nature of the rutile silk inclusions is an indicator that this sapphire has not undergone any treatment to improve its color or clarity. These inclusions cannot be seen without strong magnification. I used the Photoatlas of Inclusions volume 1 by EJ Gübelin and JI Koivula for reference.
• This is a very saturated stone, in low-lighting environments it is an inky blue with flashes of blue or green visible as it catches the light. It opens up to a brilliant blue\green under daylight or under a direct light source like an overhead light, a desk lamp or a window. This gem is especially attractive in direct sunlight.
