• Naturally occurring
• Corundum (sapphire)
• Detailed Gem Description:
A natural and untreated corundum (sapphire) that has a very slightly greenish blue hue, a medium-light tone, and slightly grayish saturation. This sapphire is opalescent due to the silk (titanium oxide) inclusions, other inclusions are also visible without magnification. Silk is very typical for untreated Montana sapphires, heat treatment dissolves this type of inclusion and improves the clarity and color of the gem. This one has not undergone any treatment! It has an open tone, it will sparkle and glow in any lighting.
• Microscopy Report:
This gem features a handful of inclusions that are typical of corundum from Montana. Most notable are the hexagonal rutile bands (photo1, 2, 3 & 4). What I believe to be elongated rutile needles (photo 4). The feather is positioned in a way that it is not visible face-up without magnification. The crisp nature of the rutile silk inclusions is an indicator that this sapphire has not undergone any treatment to improve its color or clarity. I used the Photoatlas of Inclusions volume 1 by EJ Gübelin and JI Koivula for reference.
Photos and videos were taken outdoors under an overcast sky with no direct sunlight present, additional videos were taken indoors under my overhead led lights.
