• Detailed Gem Description:
A natural and untreated corundum (sapphire) with a mixed violetish Purple and bluish Green hue. It has a medium tone and very slightly grayish saturation. A slight color shift is visible in daylight. With off-center viewing the gem turns from a dominant blue/violet to a dominant light green hue. Indoors in passive lighting, it has a dominant light purple hue with blue on the edges. In direct sunlight, it has a dominant blue/violet appearance. This is an open-tone sapphire, it will glow and sparkle in any light! Inclusions and imperfections are visible but don't dominate the appearance of the gem unless magnified.
Photos were taken exclusively in daylight, videos were taken outdoors under a blue sky with the sun near the horizon, and additional videos were taken indoors in passive lighting, under my overhead led lights, and by a window. Please review all the videos thoroughly.
Gemstone Rough Country of Origin: Umba Valley in Tanzania
Cutter: Sennin
• Microscopy Report:
This sapphire features multiple types of inclusions. This gem has multiple types of inclusions and imperfections. You can see all of them in the reference photos. Firstly it has what looks like an illuminated cloud on the left side of the gem, this is a cluster of rutile silk needles. Secondly, it has what looks like little sugar or dust droplets sprinkled throughout. At least two of these I was able to identify as guest zircon crystals, the rest may be xenotime crystals. Lastly, is the fluid-filled partially healed fracture on the right-hand side of the gem. This imperfection is visible without magnification. The crisp intact appearance of the rutile needles is an indicator that this sapphire has not undergone any heat treatment to enhance its color or clarity. I used the Photo Atlas of Inclusions volumes 1 & 3 by EJ Gübelin and JI Koivula for visual reference.
Photos 1 & 2 are a reference and scale photos. Photos 3 & 4 highlight the rutile cluster. In photo 4 you can also see what look like horizontal lines going through the gem, these are parallel twinning planes. In photo 5 you can see the fluid-filled fracture up close.
